Breaking the Stigma
Mental illness is as real and as treatable as physical illness. Depression and anxiety are among the most common health conditions globally - affecting hundreds of millions of people - yet fewer than half receive any treatment, largely because of stigma and a lack of awareness about the symptoms.
Recognising what you or a loved one is experiencing is not weakness. It is the first and most important step toward recovery.
Signs of Depression
Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a persistent state that changes how you think, feel, and function. Seek help if you notice several of the following for two or more weeks:
- Persistent low mood, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
- Changes in sleep - sleeping too much or insomnia
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Fatigue and low energy, even after rest
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Feeling worthless or excessively guilty
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Signs of Anxiety
Some anxiety is normal and helpful. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is excessive, persistent, and interferes with daily life:
- Constant, uncontrollable worry about many different things
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Physical symptoms: racing heart, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping because the mind won't stop
- Avoiding situations that trigger worry or fear
- Panic attacks - sudden intense episodes of fear with physical symptoms
What Treatment Looks Like
Both depression and anxiety respond well to treatment. Effective options include:
- Talking therapies - cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is particularly effective
- Medication - antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications when appropriate
- Lifestyle measures - regular exercise, sleep hygiene, reduced alcohol
- Support groups and peer support
