Understanding Your Condition
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it efficiently, causing blood glucose to rise above healthy levels. Over time, persistently high blood sugar damages blood vessels and nerves throughout the body - the heart, kidneys, eyes, and feet are particularly vulnerable.
The good news: tight blood glucose control dramatically reduces the risk of every single complication. People who manage their diabetes well can live long, active, healthy lives.
Blood Sugar Targets
Your doctor will set personalised targets, but general guidelines are:
- Fasting blood glucose: 4–7 mmol/L (72–126 mg/dL)
- 2 hours after meals: below 8.5 mmol/L (153 mg/dL)
- HbA1c (3-month average): below 7% for most people
Food and Nutrition
You do not need a special 'diabetes diet'. The principles are similar to healthy eating for everyone, with particular attention to carbohydrates:
- Choose complex carbohydrates - whole grains, legumes, vegetables - over refined carbs and sugary foods
- Eat regular, balanced meals and avoid skipping meals
- Fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables
- Limit sugary drinks, fruit juice, white bread, and white rice
- Choose healthy fats from fish, nuts, avocado, and olive oil
- Reduce salt to protect your blood pressure and kidneys
Physical Activity
Exercise lowers blood glucose by helping muscles use glucose without insulin. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week - walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing. Resistance exercises (bodyweight or weights) are especially beneficial for insulin sensitivity. Always check your blood sugar before and after exercise until you understand how your body responds.
Monitoring and Medications
- Monitor your blood glucose as directed by your doctor
- Take medications consistently - missing doses causes blood sugar spikes
- Never stop or adjust your medication without medical advice
- Check your feet daily for cuts, sores, or changes in sensation
- Have your eyes, kidneys, and feet checked at least annually
